For over 15 years, we’ve shared our passion for photography through the Image Expressions Program. We have taught almost 200 budding enthusiasts and have fallen more in love with photography with each exciting moment. Is 2025 your year to dive into a whole new world of endless possibilities?
SAY YES!
Do you have a nice camera but no clue how to use it? Do you still shoot on auto and let your camera make the creative decisions for you? Do you want to have beautiful images in your family photo album? Do you want to be able hang your own artwork on your wall?
Maybe you have a great eye for photography, but aren't sure how to work the technical stuff? You might even be considering a career in photography...
THIS PROGRAM IS FOR YOU!
The Image Expressions program starts with the basics of turning your camera off of auto and takes you all the way through to lighting and composition. This course teaches you the technical aspects of photography while also stretching you on a creative and emotional level. Our goal is not to create “cookie cutter” photographers, but for each person to come out of the course as a unique, expressive artist with their own creative style.
Whether you are brand new or you’ve been dabbling in it for years, you are guaranteed to gain valuable information that takes your photography to a whole new level!
Part one: The Basics
The program starts in March with 6 technical lessons that will give you a strong foundation in the basics. Each class is composed of two parts: 1-2 hours of training and then an hour of shooting at a location. Students will be given a mini assignment to complete during class and a main assignment to complete on their own each week. Assignments will be marked by the instructor with helpful feedback. A set of handouts is also provided for each class so students can refer to the written material at home.

Part four: Private Photoshop Lessons
In November, you will each be given 4 private photoshop lessons with Tineke, to teach you how to enhance your images and prepare them for display online or in print. Dates/times will vary depending on your availability. Extra lessons are available for a fee of $50/hr.
Part five: The Show
All of your hard work pays off in January when you have the opportunity to participate in the Image Expressions Photography Show, to show off the images you have spent the year creating! Certificates and awards are given out at this time to the photographers who complete the course.
“This course helps you step into another world. Besides teaching you about your DSLR ...it gets you thinking creatively and stretches your imagination. I would highly recommend this course. Set aside time and GO FOR IT! I wish I could take it all over again.”

What kind of camera equipment do I need?
You must have a digital SLR or mirrorless camera to take this program. We recommend the Canon Rebel as a great entry-level camera. You will also need a tripod. Various lenses will be introduced throughout the course, so you may wish to consider waiting to purchase additional lenses until you know the direction you want to take with your photography.
How do I sign up?
To sign up, contact Tineke at northernpersona@telus.net.
A $600 deposit is required to reserve your spot, so please do not sign up until you are certain that you wish to reserve a permanent spot in the program. A payment of $600 will be due in January, and a final payment of $690 (inc gst) is due March 1st. Spots are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. No spots will be reserved without the deposit. Please be aware that classes fill up extremely fast so do not delay! All fees are non-refundable regardless of the circumstances.
What if I miss a class?
If you have to miss the first class, it is highly recommended that you pay for a private lesson to get you up to speed. If you miss any other class or workshop, you will be given handouts that explain the material we learned.
Will I be learning how to edit my photos in Photoshop?
This course focuses on teaching you the skills necessary to do beautiful photography right in your camera without needing Photoshop. We are all in favour of digital enhancements once you have learned the important basics without relying on ‘fixing’ it later. Therefore, editing will be introduced later in the program in the form of 4 private lessons, so we can cater to your specific editing preferences/ questions. Addidtional lessons are $50 per hour.
How much time will this program take?
We suggest that you clear time in your schedule if you plan to take the IE program. Many people are surprised by the amount of time it takes to master photography. You can expect to invest at least 5-10 hours per week on assignments and practice. There are also classes and workshops ranging from 3-8 hours each. You will be receiving marks and a final report on your progress. There is a written exam after the first 6 classes that is meant to help you understand what areas you will need to work on. We take this program very seriously! Our goal is to do everything we can to help every single student be the best photographer they can be. The amount of time you invest in this course will determine how far you progress.
How good will I be when I finish this course?
The answer is: that’s up to you. We will give you 150% of our time and effort to give you the best experience possible. If you put that same amount of effort in, I have no doubt you will succeed. I am proud and honoured to say that many of my students put out exceptional work and have gone on to start businesses, win awards and have their images published. If you want that kind of success, you need to work hard, apply yourself and take advantage of every single opportunity we offer. PLEASE stay for the mini practices during each class. We have found that the students who participate in practices have a much better grasp of the new material.
Do you offer any other programs?
Absolutely! We are constantly being inspired to teach and share new things. Keep an eye on our facebook page for new programs being offered throughout the year. We have a range of in-person workshops we can teach if we have enough interest. We also regularly run online challenges to keep you motivated to get out your camera.

After signing up for the course and with Tineke’s advice on what to buy, I was then faced with the fact...I was scared of this camera and all the bits and pieces that came with it. Fast forward to that first day of the course and I left vowing never to put my camera on automatic again. Tineke makes everything simple to understand and she walks you through every step if that's what you need. The assignments are so much fun and being a small group we always have someone to ask for advice or to encourage us.
Darla Dugiud
“As far as I am concerned this course is life changing. Tineke brings something out in her students that probably a lot didn't know was even there. Her love for what she is doing shows through in every class & it is that, that makes her an amazing teacher. She will (somehow - I'm not sure how) get you to tap into emotions & creativity that you didn't know you had. Tineke is inspiring in her love for what she does. Oh! And she makes it so much FUN......I couldn't wait to get to class each week.”
Skye Perry
“I started this course with hopes of learning more about the technical functions of my camera but I came away with so much more than that. What you brought to the course, not only with your depth of knowledge and talent, but also your energy, enthusiasm and love of photography, was so refreshing and inspiring. The assignments were reflective & fun and they challenged me to stretch my mind beyond point and shoot pictures, to bringing more of myself into a practice of creating meaningful images. Your ongoing feedback and encouragement really helped me to improve my skills and become a more mindful and contemplative photographer. It was also nice to meet other likeminded people. I enjoyed this course so much and highly recommend it to others.”
Sarah Barber
“The course was fantastic....I could not wait for Sundays to come around and 2 hrs was never enough. Professional, easy to understand, enjoyable and above all...you gave us the technical AND artistic knowledge to make all of us be able to take amazing photographs. I can’t thank you enough for turning my interest into a real passion. I can highly recommend the course to anyone. In fact I do.... on a daily basis!!!”
Jeff Closs
“I was forced to think outside the box and do things that I might never have tried, and then show them to someone. This was a great learning experience for me. I love portraiture now, before the course I was almost scared of it. Image Expressions changed the way I think of my photography, and how I think of myself as a photographer.”
Dianne Put
“This course is not a light weekend hobbyist jaunt through snapping some photos. This is an amazing opportunity to delve deeper into being MORE.
A more dedicated student, more skilled photographer and a MORE invested individual. There are many other courses in the community that offer a ' lighter ' investment and I considered them. I am glad I chose this path though. This course gave me the MORE that I was looking for and my photos show it. More quality, more perspectives and more of me.”
